Not everybody respects book authors. Yet – most do:

Publishing an authority book can be viewed as rocket fuel for your career – especially if book writing is not your main job but you’re doing it on the side.

It’s a classic positive expected-value activity:

• Some will respect you more for having written a book on the side.
• Some will respect you much more.
• And the rest will respect you the same. 

Nobody will respect you less.

Now you may ask: How can it help me in my specific career?

Well, it might help you get a better job or get respected more in your current job/business.

Story: A friend of mine one day decided to coauthor a technical authority book about an engineering-related topic he was interested in (on the side). At the time, he was working a job in the social sector. The book was the key trust element that got him the exact dream job position at the company creating the engineering tool he was writing about. He loves his new job more and earns twice the income. The book was a major element of this success story – he may not have gotten the job without the book. 

For example, say you publish books in your area of expertise, build authority, and ultimately lift your income by only 20% as a first- or second-order consequence. The average salary in the US is roughly $60k, so +20% creates an additional +$12k per year. Investing that additional +$12k/y into an index fund yielding 9% p.a. results in a nice additional nest egg of $613k after 20 years.

The compounding effects of book writing can be magical! Of course this carries a few assumptions but nothing too unrealistic: 9% annual yield, a one-time 20% salary boost by building authority in your field, that’s about it.

And also please note that I didn’t even mention the immediate first-order cash flow your book might generate passively on Amazon KDP, for instance.

How can you publish a book – or multiple books – in your area of expertise? 

Well, just get started writing a draft with a non-fiction engine.

You can edit the book in a Word document and include your own stories, so it becomes yours.

I know you will find that the quality of your generated book is surprisingly high. Paying the equivalent of a coffee at Starbucks to become a (published) author is not too heavy a burden.

I like simple and proven business models that just work.

Here’s a common business model that’s as simple as it gets – but proven by millions of content creators all around the world:

• Step 2: Get lots of people reading your content, and
• Step 3: Monetize your website with ads (use premium platforms such as Ezoic, Adthrive, Mediavine, …) as you reach 10k to 50k monthly readers.

For instance, if you publish 10 articles a day — that’s super easy if you use the best AI blogging tools — and one article drives an average of 1000 visitors over its lifetime, you’ll converge to:

10 articles * 1000 visitors * 30 days = 300,000 visitors per month.

A common revenue per thousand visitors is $30. Under these assumptions, the AI blog would generate:

300,000 * $30 / 1,000 = $9,000 per month.

But is it reasonable to reach 1000 visitors per article? Yes, I think so. I usually reach many more with my articles. But you need to make sure that the articles are well-written and that you have done your homework researching “content gaps” that others do not address well.

Not by luck or crazy speculation but following a simple strategy of building a small startup on the side, investing the income in an ETF, and compounding your wealth. After 4 years, you sell your tiny startup and reach millionaire status with a ~$10k per month passive income from your investments.

I’ve done it. There’s lots of material on how to build such a small startup — I assume you’re NOT an expert but you accomplish only a small fraction of the success of expert founders that would be sought-after by Silicon Valley VCs like YCombinator:

Graham: “A good growth rate during YC is 5-7% a week. If you can hit 10% a week you’re doing exceptionally well. If you can only manage 1%, it’s a sign you haven’t yet figured out what you’re doing.” (source)

For our little project to $1M, I do NOT assume you reach a wild 5-7% growth rate per week or ~20-28% per month. Let’s leave those big growth rates for the big guys in Silicon Valley that target billion-dollar valuations.

We’ll cut the 7% weekly growth rate by half and then by half again to target a 7% per MONTH growth rate. That’s absolutely achievable with a bit of elbow grease.

We’ll assume a 40x multiple on MONTHLY profits. Most online businesses have a multiple of roughly 40x. It’s more towards the low end. For example, see these two businesses from Empireflippers:

Finally, we’ll assume you accumulate an investment vehicle that grows like the NASDAQ (16% compound annual growth rate). A simple ETF will do.

You can make these assumptions happen. You can do it!

Here’s the four-year plan:

• Months 1-7: Figure out what you’re doing. $0 income.
• Months 8-12: Scale your monthly income to $1600 through hustling and iteration.
• Months 13-47: Just focus on one thing — keep your monthly growth rate at 7%. Do all it takes to maintain this rate. It’s not a crazy growth rate — you can do it!
• Month 48: Sell your online business on an online marketplace (e.g., Flippa, Empireflippers, …) and buy the remaining investments from the proceeds of the sale. Voilà, you’re financially free with $1 million in a passive investment vehicle!
